How to get to Bad Hofgastein in the Gasteinertal, Salzburg, the fastest way

Whether by train, car, or plane – every journey to Bad Hofgastein begins with the same feeling: arriving in the midst of the mountains. Just 75 kilometres south of Salzburg, the Gasteinertal opens up – a valley where relaxation comes easily. And the best part: the journey itself can be as relaxing as the holiday, thanks to excellent connections and climate-friendly mobility.

By Train

The train is one of the most pleasant ways to get to Bad Hofgastein. On the Tauern Railway, ÖBB Railjet and Intercity trains run regularly, offering direct connections from Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich, and many other cities. The journey takes you through breathtaking Alpine landscapes – and ends right in the heart of the valley, just a stone’s throw from your holiday destination.

Guests alight directly in Bad Hofgastein. From there, it’s straight on to the accommodation on foot, or by shuttle, bus, or taxi.

TRAIN CONNECTION

ÖBB Shuttle Service

Particularly convenient: with the ÖBB Shuttle Service, onward travel from Bad Hofgastein station can be booked together with your train ticket. Reserve by 8.00 p.m. the day before, and you will be picked up at the station and taken comfortably to your accommodation.

ÖBB TRANSFER

By Plane

Salzburg Airport (SZG) is the nearest destination airport for the journey into the Gasteinertal. From there, regular transfer services run directly into the region – in around an hour and a half, you reach your holiday destination. Excellent connections also exist from Munich, Vienna, or Innsbruck by train, shuttle, or a combination of different modes of transport.

By Car

The Gasteinertal can be reached via the Tauern motorway A10 and the Bischofshofen exit. From there, the route takes you through green valleys and past your first glimpses of the peaks straight to Bad Hofgastein.

The drive through the Alps is scenically rewarding and well signposted. In Bad Hofgastein, there are ample parking facilities at the cable cars, the thermal baths, and the accommodations. Numerous EV charging stations are available for electric vehicles, so sustainable travel by your own car is easily possible as well.

Notes on travelling by your own vehicle:

  • A motorway vignette is required on Austrian motorways.
  • For guests travelling from the south, we recommend the Tauernbahn Car Train between Böckstein and Mallnitz to cross the main Alpine ridge.
